The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to defending universal human rights "without fear or favour," as stated by Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, the UK's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. This declaration was made at the UN Third Committee on Human Rights, where MacIntosh addressed a range of global human rights issues.

Global Human Rights Challenges

Ambassador MacIntosh highlighted several pressing human rights challenges around the world. In Gaza, basic humanitarian needs remain unmet, and the UK supports the full implementation of the 20-Point Plan. The UK remains committed to a credible political process towards a two-state solution, condemning abuses by Hamas and other non-state actors. The UK has taken action to address settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank, which undermine the prospect for a two-state solution.

In Ukraine, five years into Russia's full-scale invasion, the human cost continues to grow. Russian forces have been accused of attacking civilian infrastructure, torturing detainees, and unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children. The UK calls for Russia to be held accountable and for Ukraine's sovereignty to be upheld.

In Sudan, civilians face atrocity crimes and conflict-related sexual violence. The illegal flow of weapons is sustaining the conflict, and the UK urges all states to stop supporting the warring parties and to respect international humanitarian law.

Human Rights Violations in Other Regions

The UK also addressed human rights violations in other regions. In Myanmar, the military has been accused of committing airstrikes on schools and hospitals. The UK supports efforts to collect evidence to hold perpetrators accountable.

In Afghanistan, Taliban decrees systematically exclude women and girls from education and public life. The UK calls these policies indefensible and urges the Taliban to reverse them.

In Iran, thousands of peaceful protesters were killed by security forces in January, with many more executed or on death row. The UK calls for an end to the violent suppression of dissent and for cooperation with UN accountability mechanisms.

In China, evidence of violations in Xinjiang and Tibet persists, with the Ethnic Unity Law risking further restrictions on ethnic minorities. The UK urges China to implement recommendations to address these issues.

Commitment to Human Rights

Ambassador MacIntosh emphasized that the principles defended at the UN Third Committee are not abstract but are essential for protecting human dignity and preventing instability and conflict. She stated, "Our response must put human rights and the rule of law at its heart." The UK remains committed to turning shared commitments into practical change for people worldwide.
