A federal jury has convicted Juan Carlos Oliva Lopez, 47, of Houston, Texas, on charges of possessing five kilograms or more of cocaine with the intent to distribute. The verdict was delivered on October 14, 2026, following a trial held in Urbana, Illinois. Sentencing is scheduled for February 19, 2027, at the U.

S. Courthouse in Urbana.

According to the U. S. Attorney's Office, Oliva Lopez was apprehended on February 19, 2024, by Illinois State Police troopers on Interstate 57 near Clifton, Illinois.

During the stop, authorities discovered 20 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a suitcase underneath a bed in the semitruck he was driving. This incident was part of a broader investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The trial revealed that just nine days prior to the Illinois stop, Oliva Lopez had been stopped in North Carolina, where law enforcement found more than $330,000 in cash hidden in a concealed compartment of another semitruck he was driving. These findings were crucial pieces of evidence presented by the prosecution during the two-day trial.

Oliva Lopez remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service as he awaits sentencing. He faces significant penalties, including a minimum of ten years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000,000, and at least five years of supervised release.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Illinois State Police, the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the Rowan County Sheriff's Department in North Carolina. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys William J. Lynch and Rachel E. Ritzer.

The conviction of Oliva Lopez marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking across state lines. The case highlights the cooperation between federal and state law enforcement agencies in addressing the illegal drug trade.
