The United Kingdom has issued a strong condemnation of the recent escalation in the Yemen conflict by Houthi forces. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Ambassador Kate Foster, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted the severe impact of the Houthis' actions on regional stability and civilian welfare.

The UK government expressed grave concerns over the intensified conflict, which has resulted in increased civilian suffering and further complicated peace efforts. The Houthis' siege of Taiz City, which threatens vital supply routes, has exacerbated the already fragile health system in Yemen. The UK described these actions as a "reckless disregard for the wellbeing of the Yemeni people."

The conflict has had dire humanitarian consequences. Since the fighting intensified in September, 479 civilians have been killed or injured, and more than 200,000 people have been displaced. The humanitarian situation is further strained as 300 primary healthcare clinics have been affected, limiting access to essential care. The UK has committed $137 million to support humanitarian efforts in Yemen this year.

The UK also extended condolences to Saudi Arabia following attacks on the Abha and King Khalid International airports. The UK reaffirmed its support for the governments of Yemen and Saudi Arabia, emphasizing their right to defend their security and sovereignty in accordance with international law.

The UK government called for the Houthis to de-escalate and return to diplomatic negotiations. Ambassador Foster noted that the Houthis' attacks on shipping and infrastructure pose a significant threat to regional and global security, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The UK highlighted the importance of international pressure on the Houthis to comply with UN resolutions, specifically Resolution 2140, which aims to halt the flow of arms to Houthi-controlled areas. The UK urged all Member States to adhere to the sanctions regime established by the resolution.

In conclusion, the UK remains committed to supporting efforts for de-escalation and an inclusive political process in Yemen. The UK continues to advocate for dialogue and a political settlement as the only viable solution to the conflict, urging the Houthis to choose diplomacy over continued violence.
