The U. S. military has evacuated a dozen B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, a U.
S. -run military air base in England, amid threats of an attack allegedly linked to Iran. The Pentagon confirmed that all bombers stationed at the base have been re-deployed to their home stations in the United States.
The evacuation occurred over the weekend following an investigation into a planned terror attack at the base. British security forces arrested several dual British-Iranian citizens suspected of planning the attack last week. Among those arrested was a dual British-Iranian national taken into custody in central London.
While six individuals have been detained and subsequently released on bail, British authorities have linked the incident to Tehran. However, Iran has denied any involvement in the plot.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel provided intelligence to the UK regarding the threat of an Iranian attack. The Pentagon acknowledged the intelligence and took precautionary measures by evacuating the bombers.
RAF Fairford, located 100 miles west of London, has been a strategic base for the U.S. Air Force, with dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers operating out of the base since the opening days of the Iran war. Some of the bombers had just arrived at the base as part of a rotation before the evacuation was ordered.
Despite the withdrawal from RAF Fairford, the U. S. military continues to maintain a significant presence in the Middle East.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and the USS Malkin Island amphibious readiness group are currently heading for the region. The USS Malkin Island carries over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, and their arrival could result in three carriers being stationed in the region by the end of October.
The situation remains tense as investigations continue, and the U.S. military remains vigilant in its operations and deployments in response to potential threats.
