Bodum USA has announced a recall of 5.9 million French press coffee makers due to a significant risk of burn injuries. The recall, which affects models with replaceable glass carafes, was initiated after reports of the glass containers breaking unexpectedly during use, posing a serious hazard to consumers.

The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) detailed that the glass carafes can break if they are damaged or cracked, especially when metal spoons are used to stir the coffee.

Bodum USA has received 70 reports of such breakages, with 48 incidents resulting in burn injuries to consumers. The affected models include 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya French presses.

The recall applies to French presses sold from 1974 through October 2026. The Bodum name is typically found on the frame and inner lid of most models and is engraved on the glass carafes. Consumers are advised to stop using metal utensils to stir coffee in these carafes immediately.

Instead, they should contact Bodum to receive a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label. The label serves as a reminder not to use cracked or damaged carafes and to avoid using metal spoons to prevent further damage and potential breakage.

Consumers can reach Bodum USA toll-free at 888-879-8213 from 8 a. m. to 5 p.

m. ET Monday through Friday, or via email at Bodum3302@sedgwick. com.

The CPSC, which is responsible for protecting the public from unreasonable risks associated with consumer products, emphasizes the importance of adhering to recall instructions to prevent further injuries. Federal law prohibits the sale of products subject to a Commission-ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.

This recall highlights the ongoing efforts of the CPSC and companies like Bodum USA to ensure consumer safety and prevent injuries related to product defects.
