The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of NTI and HTP brand gas boilers due to significant safety hazards. The recall affects thousands of units sold in the United States and Canada, posing risks of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, and impact injuries.

The boilers, manufactured by Ariston Thermo USA LLC, formerly known as NTI Boilers, have been identified as having a critical flaw. According to the CPSC, the condensate dish inside the boiler can crack during a delayed ignition. This defect allows unburned gas to accumulate within the sealed cabinet. If this gas ignites, it can cause the front cover of the boiler to suddenly detach, leading to potential serious injuries or fatalities.

Affected Models and Incidents

The recall involves NTI brand residential gas boilers in the FTVN and TFTN model series, and HTP brand residential gas boilers in the EFTU model series. Specifically, the affected models have serial numbers ranging from 3260054C8222970000170 to 3260031C8223130000062. In total, 4,726 units were sold in the United States, with an additional 2,261 units sold in Canada.

Ariston has received 34 reports of the condensate dish breaking, with three incidents involving the front cover detaching from the boiler. In one case, a technician servicing a boiler sustained a broken jaw due to the sudden detachment of the front cover.

Consumer Guidance

Consumers who own the recalled boilers are urged to stop using them immediately and contact Ariston to arrange for a free repair by a certified technician. For those who must continue using the boiler while awaiting repair, it is crucial to have functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in their homes.

Ariston Thermo USA LLC, based in Providence, Rhode Island, is handling the recall process. Consumers can reach Ariston at 800-688-2575 from 7 a. m.

to 8 p. m. ET, Monday through Friday.

Additional information is available on their websites, ntiboilers. com and htproducts. com, under the "RECALLS" and "URGENT RECALL" sections, respectively.

Regulatory Context

The CPSC, which is responsible for protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products, has emphasized the importance of adhering to the recall notice. Federal law prohibits the sale of products that are subject to a Commission-ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.

The recall of these gas boilers highlights the ongoing efforts of the CPSC to ensure consumer safety and prevent injuries related to faulty products. Consumers are encouraged to take immediate action to mitigate any risks associated with the recalled boilers.
