DoorDash has announced its acquisition of grocery delivery service Instacart in a deal valued at approximately $17 billion. The acquisition, revealed on Thursday, marks a significant expansion for DoorDash, which already commands about two-thirds of all food delivery volumes in the United States.

Expansion of Services

The merger will allow Instacart customers to access more than 50,000 additional stores, adding to the nearly 100,000 stores currently available on Instacart's platform. This expansion is expected to enhance DoorDash's presence in the online grocery delivery market, an area where it has already established its own business. The deal will also streamline membership services, as DashPass and Instacart+ members will now pay a single membership fee instead of two separate ones.

DoorDash plans to retain the Instacart brand and its technology, ensuring that the platform's established grocery marketplace and retailer partnerships remain intact. Until the transaction is finalized, DoorDash and Instacart will continue to operate as separate entities.

Strategic Moves and Market Position

This acquisition follows DoorDash's purchase of UK-based Deliveroo last year, as the company continues to expand its global footprint. The move also comes as Instacart faces increasing competition from major players like Amazon and Walmart in the grocery delivery sector. Instacart, which saw significant growth during the Covid-19 pandemic, has struggled to find new growth avenues in recent years.

DoorDash's share price has declined by about a third over the past year, highlighting the competitive and dynamic nature of the delivery market. The acquisition of Instacart could help bolster DoorDash's market position by integrating Instacart's established network of grocery retailers.

Financial Details and Regulatory Background

DoorDash will pay $65 per share for Instacart, uniting two of the largest grocery and food-delivery companies in the country. The acquisition is expected to allow more supermarkets to utilize Instacart's platform, further expanding its reach.

Recently, DoorDash settled with New York City regulators for $131.5 million to resolve charges that it deprived workers of millions of dollars in tips. This settlement underscores the regulatory challenges that delivery companies face as they navigate complex labor and business environments.

The completion of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and no specific timeline for the finalization has been announced.
