Governor Greg Abbott announced that five Texas community colleges have received approval from the U.S. Department of Education to offer Workforce Pell student aid. This aid is specifically designed for short-term programs that prepare students for high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand jobs.

In addition to the Workforce Pell approval, a consortium of Texas community colleges, led by the Alamo Colleges District, has been awarded a $10. 4 million grant from the U. S.

Department of Labor. This grant will be used to enhance industry-focused programs that are eligible for Workforce Pell aid.

The Department of Labor grant will support a four-year initiative aimed at creating and expanding high-quality, short-term workforce programs across Texas community colleges. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 22,000 students.

The five Texas colleges approved for Workforce Pell student aid will offer nine different short-term programs. These programs include specialized training in fields such as phlebotomy, machining, and HVAC technology.

Kilgore College will provide courses in Electric Power Technology (KCEPT), Phlebotomy Technician, and Pharmacy Technician. Weatherford College will offer HVAC – Basic, Basic Machining, and CNC Machining Advanced programs. Texas Southmost College will offer a program in Structural Welding – SMAW. San Jacinto College will provide a Phlebotomy Technician program, while Central Texas College will offer a Pharmacy Technician program.

These educational initiatives are part of a broader effort to equip students with the skills needed for today's job market, focusing on high-demand careers that promise competitive wages and opportunities for advancement.
