An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with plotting a mass shooting at the Mall of America in support of ISIS, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud faces federal charges for allegedly planning the attack.

The U.S. Attorney's Office filed criminal charges against Mohamud, accusing him of knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition for use in a felony or federal crime of terrorism. The charges were announced on Wednesday, following Mohamud's arrest after he purchased an AK-47.

Prosecutors allege that Mohamud communicated over messaging apps and TikTok with an informant for several months, during which he pledged support to ISIS and expressed a desire to attack the Mall of America. According to the charges, Mohamud allegedly stated his intention to carry out the attack because the mall is "owned by Jews."

In the communications, Mohamud allegedly mentioned wanting to kill 30 people in the attack and expressed intentions to harm Jews in a manner similar to attacks that occurred at Bondi Beach in Australia. He reportedly stated he had 260 rounds of ammunition and aimed to kill between 30 to 60 people.

The charges against Mohamud are serious, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic terrorism and the influence of extremist groups like ISIS.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has not announced any upcoming court dates for Mohamud's case.

Charges and allegations are not proof of guilt. Anyone charged is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
