Romeo Blackman, the leader of the notorious Goonie Gang in Chicago, has been sentenced to life in federal prison. Blackman, who was convicted by a federal jury in 2023, was sentenced on September 29, 2026, by U. S.
District Judge John Robert Blakey. The sentencing follows Blackman's conviction for racketeering conspiracy and violence in aid of racketeering, according to the U. S.
Attorney's Office.
Blackman, 30, was found guilty of personally committing four murders and three attempted murders. He also engaged in narcotics sales and trafficked stolen firearms. As the leader of the Goonie Gang, Blackman was known for violently preventing witnesses from cooperating with law enforcement and publicly boasting about the gang's activities on social media. He also instructed and encouraged juvenile members of the gang to commit murders.
The Goonie Gang, under Blackman's leadership, terrorized the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The gang's reign of terror was eventually disrupted by a series of federal indictments, which led to the convictions of numerous gang members and associates.
The sentence was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Ryan Whalen, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI; and Fred Waller, Interim Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. The investigation received valuable assistance from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Assistant U. S. Attorney Simar Khera represented the government in the case.
In the sentencing memorandum, the government emphasized the gravity of Blackman's crimes, stating, "The seriousness of the defendant’s crimes cannot be overstated. His actions ended the life of numerous individuals, depriving their families of time with their loved ones. His leadership of the Goonies corrupted numerous young minds and assisted their turn into violent individuals."
The extensive federal investigation into the Goonie Gang spanned several years and resulted in the convictions of many of its members, highlighting the gang's significant impact on the community and the law enforcement's commitment to dismantling organized crime in Chicago.
