Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, has died at the age of 84.

Hastert passed away over the weekend at his home in Illinois, with his death confirmed by Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell. The coroner stated that Hastert died of natural causes.

Hastert's political career spanned two decades, during which he represented Illinois in Congress from 1987 to 2007. He became Speaker of the House in 1999, holding the position until 2007, making him the longest-serving Republican Speaker in U. S.

history. Hastert played a significant role in advancing much of President George W. Bush’s legislative agenda during his tenure.

However, Hastert's legacy was marred by a criminal conviction related to a hush-money scheme. In 2016, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for violating banking laws as part of an effort to conceal payments made to cover up allegations of sexual abuse. Hastert was accused of molesting four teenage boys, aged 14 to 17, during his time as a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in the 1970s. These allegations, which he faced later in life, led to his downfall as a public figure.

Born in Aurora, Illinois, in 1942, Hastert grew up in a farming community. He pursued higher education at Wheaton College, where he earned a degree in economics, followed by a teaching degree from Northern Illinois University. In 1973, he married Jean Kahl, and together they had two sons.

Hastert's political career ended when he announced his resignation from Congress before the conclusion of his 11th term, following the Democratic Party's takeover of the House in 2007. Despite his achievements in the political arena, his later years were overshadowed by the criminal case and the allegations of abuse.

Hastert's death marks the end of a complex and controversial chapter in American political history, reflecting both his influence as a legislative leader and the scandal that ultimately defined his legacy.
