Texas Enforces Water Use Compliance for Data Centers
Governor Abbott directs strict measures for data centers to report accurate water use data.
Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive to the Texas Water Development Board, mandating strict enforcement of water use reporting from major users like data centers. In a move to ensure compliance with state laws, the board is to impose penalties for past and future violations. Abbott has also directed collaboration with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to audit these centers. The audits will scrutinize water consumption and efficiency practices. Data centers failing to comply with these reporting rules could face legal challenges and lose eligibility for certain permits. The board will update progress on enforcement activities by October 2026.
