Willard Lawrence Gibson, a 48-year-old resident of Seattle, Washington, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for multiple child exploitation offenses. The sentencing was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
Gibson was convicted on several charges, including one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children, one count of attempted enticement of a minor, one count of attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor, and one count of distribution of child pornography. These convictions stem from an undercover operation conducted in July 2025 by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other law enforcement agencies.
During the operation, Gibson communicated with an undercover officer who was posing as a child. The interactions began on a social media platform and later moved to text messaging. During these exchanges, Gibson sent two images of child sexual abuse material to the undercover officer and repeatedly requested the production and transfer of child pornography images.
Upon his arrest in Seattle, Gibson's cell phone was seized and searched, revealing multiple images and videos of child sexual abuse material. The phone also contained evidence confirming his communications with the undercover officer.
Law Enforcement Collaboration
The successful prosecution of Gibson was a result of the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Leon County Sheriff's Office, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Seattle Police Department, among others. "This successful prosecution and substantial prison sentence were made possible thanks to the outstanding investigative work of our state and federal law enforcement partners," said U.S. Attorney Heekin.
Nicholas Ingegno, acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations Tampa, emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, "Predators who use sexually explicit material to groom, manipulate, or prey on a child is committing a calculated and unforgivable abuse of that child’s trust and vulnerability."
Project Safe Childhood
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
Following his 30-year prison term, Gibson will be required to register as a sexual offender and will remain on supervised release for the rest of his life. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Eric W. Welch, highlighting the commitment of the U.
S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida to aggressively prosecute these crimes to ensure the safety of children both online and in communities.
