New Enzyme Discovery Sheds Light on Bacterial Resistance
Scientists identify AvaS, a groundbreaking enzyme affecting bacterial metabolism and tRNA modification.
An international team of scientists has uncovered a new enzyme, aminovaleramididine synthetase or AvaS, revolutionizing our understanding of bacterial adaptation. AvaS is the first enzyme of its kind to produce aminovaleramide cytidine, or ava2C, a tRNA modification, previously detected but largely unexplored. This revelation shows that PLP-dependent enzymes, once thought limited to amino acid metabolism, directly modify tRNA, changing bacterial gene reading and enhancing protein production. Led by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, the study published in Nature Chemical Biology details that AvaS enables bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa to adapt to metabolic stress, possibly informing future treatments against antimicrobial resistance.
