MIT Debuts Robotic Optics Lab Capable of Autonomous Reconfiguration
The lab uses robotics to assemble and tune optical setups with high precision.
MIT scientists have created a groundbreaking robotic optics laboratory that can autonomously reconfigure itself. The system assembles standard optical components with micron-scale precision and can even dismantle and reshape experiments. Central to the lab's capabilities is a seven-jointed robotic arm that integrates a Wi-Fi-enabled fine-adjustment tool, giving it the ability to accurately tune optical components. The system can construct a laser cavity and perform complex tasks like centering and aligning laser beams while adapting to disturbances. Remote users can guide the robot via a virtual interface, with improvements ongoing for physical sensing and maneuvering. MIT's team will present these advancements at the upcoming Intelligent Robots and Systems conference.
