Former U.S. Congressman David Rivera has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in a secret lobbying campaign on behalf of the Venezuelan government. The sentencing took place in federal court in Downtown Miami, following Rivera's conviction on all counts by a jury after a seven-week trial.
Rivera, who had been in federal custody without bond since May 1, faced charges including failing to register as a foreign agent with the Justice Department and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The lobbying campaign was valued at $50 million, and Rivera was involved in laundering millions of dollars connected to his work as an agent for the Venezuelan government, according to the Justice Department.
The former congressman faced a maximum possible statutory sentence of up to 60 years in federal prison and a potential $20 million asset forfeiture judgment. Despite these potential penalties, Rivera received a 10-year sentence.
In addition to Rivera, political consultant Esther Nuhfer was also found guilty on all counts related to the case. The sentencing marks the culmination of a legal process that began with Rivera's arrest and detention earlier this year.
Rivera's sentencing was initially scheduled for July 20 but was later moved to October 2. The case highlights the serious legal consequences of acting as an unregistered agent for a foreign government and engaging in related financial crimes.
