Federal authorities have charged 260 individuals with immigration and border security-related offenses in the Southern District of Texas as part of a nationwide initiative known as Operation Take Back America. The charges, filed between October 2 and October 8, include a range of immigration violations, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The majority of the cases involve felony reentry after prior removal, with 177 criminal complaints filed under this category. An additional 41 individuals face charges of illegal entry. Furthermore, 37 people are charged with human smuggling, including 13 illegal aliens, while five cases involve other immigration crimes and firearms charges.
Among those charged is Orlando Rene Flores-Orellana, a Guatemalan national who was allegedly discovered unlawfully in the country near Peñitas. Flores-Orellana, who has a prior conviction for firearm possession, faces charges of felony reentry. Another individual, Jose Manuel Fernandez-Martinez, was found near Pharr after his removal on March 11, 2022.
He has a prior conviction for manufacturing and delivering cocaine. Both Flores-Orellana and Fernandez-Martinez face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
In addition to these new charges, Eliseo Henriquez-Joya, a Honduran national, has been sentenced to 72 months in prison for conspiring to transport illegal aliens. Identified as a leader in smuggling operations, Henriquez-Joya coordinated the transport of approximately 188 illegal aliens using various vehicles, including box trucks and tractor-trailers. During the investigation, authorities discovered hidden compartments and false walls in these vehicles, which concealed individuals in spaces with little ventilation.
The cases are supported by multiple federal law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service, among others. The Southern District of Texas, which covers 44,000 square miles and represents over 10 million people, remains one of the busiest jurisdictions in the nation.
Operation Take Back America is a comprehensive effort by the Department of Justice to address illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and enhance community safety. The initiative underscores the current leadership's focus on public safety and border security, with a particular emphasis on prosecuting individuals with serious criminal histories, including those involved in human trafficking and violent crimes.
The U.S. Attorney's Office emphasizes that an indictment or criminal complaint is a formal accusation and not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due process of law.
Charges and allegations are not proof of guilt. Anyone charged is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
