Unveiling NGC 4698: A Unique Spiral Galaxy

In the vast expanse of the Virgo constellation, about 55 million light-years away, lies the spiral galaxy NGC 4698. It's part of the massive Virgo Cluster, comprising over a thousand galaxies. NGC 4698 captivates scientists with its distinctive features. It has spiral arms wrapped around a thin disk of stars, gas, and dust. At its core, an elongated bulge stretches out at a right angle from the disk, with a supermassive black hole millions of times the mass of our sun at its center. Interestingly, stars and gas near the center rotate perpendicular to the rest of the disk. Some evidence suggests NGC 4698 might have once undergone a minor galactic merger, adding to its unique characteristics.
