Shannon Lucid: Pioneering Astronaut's Storied NASA Career

Lucid's remarkable achievements include records aboard Mir and leadership roles at NASA.

Shannon W. Lucid broke new ground when she became one of the first female astronauts at NASA in 1978. Notably, on September 23, 1996, she monitored wheat growth aboard the Russian space station Mir. Over six months there, she collaborated with Russian cosmonauts on vital life science experiments. Lucid's 188-day mission set a record for American and female astronauts at the time. Returning on space shuttle Atlantis on September 26, 1996, her groundbreaking work was recognized in December when President Bill Clinton awarded her the prestigious Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Lucid became the first woman and tenth overall to receive this honor. Post-mission, she served as CAPCOM in Mission Control and later as NASA’s Chief Scientist, retiring in 2012 after over 30 years of service.
