The Nigerian Presidency is taking significant steps to address crime by expanding its skills acquisition and entrepreneurship training programs. This initiative, announced by Dr Abiola Arogundade, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, aims to provide a non-kinetic approach to crime prevention.
A Collaborative Effort
During a meeting held in Abuja, Dr Arogundade collaborated with Maj. -Gen. Adeyinka A.
Famadewa (Rtd) to discuss strategies for economic empowerment, employability, and sustainable livelihoods. The partnership is designed to empower citizens and raise awareness about the importance of positive engagement, steering them away from crime and criminality.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy that recognizes the need for a comprehensive security approach. This approach combines military and law enforcement operations with education and skills development, aiming to reduce the vulnerability of unemployed and economically disadvantaged youths to criminal recruitment.
Linking Education with Security
The collaboration between Dr Arogundade and Maj.-Gen. Famadewa reflects the administration's efforts to link vocational education with homeland security objectives. By doing so, the partnership seeks to strengthen community resilience and promote social stability.
Maj.-Gen. Famadewa emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to addressing insecurity, highlighting the role of unified intelligence and surveillance in improving the identification of security threats. This proposed collaboration is expected to create pathways to sustainable livelihoods and strengthen peacebuilding efforts across Nigeria.
A Comprehensive Security Strategy
The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration's broader efforts to integrate education, economic opportunities, and national security. By expanding skills acquisition programs, the government aims to create sustainable opportunities for citizens, ultimately enhancing peace and stability in the region.
Through this comprehensive strategy, the Nigerian Presidency hopes to foster a more secure and economically stable environment, reducing the allure of crime for vulnerable populations and contributing to the country's overall development.
