Indonesia Investigates Special Treatment Allegations in Prisons
Suspensions follow the discovery of luxurious facilities allegedly used by inmates.

According to an initial, single report, allegations have surfaced regarding preferential treatment for certain inmates in Indonesia's prisons through bribery. This comes after five prison officials were suspended and investigators uncovered an apartment-style compound at a prison near Jakarta. Inside, air conditioners, big-screen televisions, and expensive cars were allegedly used by inmates.
Syafrida Rachmawati Rasahan from Indonesia's ombudsman highlighted strong indications of special facilities being accessed by some prisoners. Instead of typical prison cells, these spaces resembled home stays, apartments, and villas, and prisoners were found residing within them.
