Jerrell Lamont Jackson, a 41-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, has been charged in connection with a shootout that occurred on October 18, 2026, in the Barracks Row neighborhood of Southeast Washington D. C. The incident resulted in a National Guardsman being injured, according to the U.
S. Attorney's Office.
Jackson faces multiple charges, including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Felon, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), and Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence or Dangerous Offense. These charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Incident Details
The shootout took place at approximately 11:10 p.m. on October 18, when officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District responded to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of 8th Street SE. Members of the National Guard, who were patrolling the Barracks Row corridor, attempted to intervene in a fight that had broken out in the area.
During the altercation, Jackson allegedly brandished a pistol and began shooting. National Guard members ordered him to drop the weapon, but Jackson attempted to flee while continuing to fire his pistol at the Guardsmen. In response, three National Guard members returned fire, striking Jackson. During the exchange of gunfire, one Guardsman was hit in the leg.
Both Jackson and the injured Guardsman were transported to area hospitals by DC Fire and EMS for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators later recovered a Taurus G2C 9mm pistol from underneath a vehicle that Jackson had run behind after the shooting. Police also found at least 14 shell casings at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team, which is responsible for examining all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
U.S. Attorney Pirro emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, "This brazen attack on the National Guard by a repeat violent offender firing into a crowded corridor is exactly the kind of lawlessness our city refuses to tolerate." She praised the National Guard and other task force partners for their quick response and efforts in restoring order.
The details provided in the charging document are allegations, and Jackson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation continues as authorities work to gather more information about the incident.
Charges and allegations are not proof of guilt. Anyone charged is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
