Unexpected Igneous Rocks Found in Jezero Crater on Mars

NASA's Perseverance rover discovers igneous rocks in the Jezero Crater's ancient lake bed.

NASA's Perseverance rover has made an intriguing discovery in the Jezero Crater on Mars. The rover reached the Margin Unit, a region shaped by ancient lakes and groundwater systems, in September 2023. Scientists anticipated finding sedimentary rocks which are ideal for preserving past microbial life. Instead, they identified igneous rocks, formed through volcanic activity or deep underground magma. These rocks displayed water interactions indicating at least three separate events. Perseverance’s SuperCam, which analyzes rock mineralogy from up to 21 feet away, has examined over 185 targets here. The findings, published in Communications Earth & Environment, provide new insights into Mars' geological history.
