Nigeria Expands Affordable CNG Transit Program

Nigerian states are slashing transport costs with expanded CNG and electric bus services.

On August 27, President Tinubu met with Nigeria's state governors to discuss transportation costs. Starting October 1, many Nigerians are expected to experience reduced fares due to the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme. This initiative, chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, aims to expand the use of CNG-powered and electric buses. In Borno, fares for CNG services range from ₦50 to ₦100, while commercial operators charge much more. In Kaduna, 100 CNG buses have served 3.2 million passengers, cutting transport costs by over ₦3.5 billion. Oyo has seen the Lagos–Ibadan fare drop significantly, and similar reductions are noted in Adamawa, Enugu, and Plateau. Abuja's CNG services offer a 40 percent fare reduction, and the Suleja–Abuja service has also cut fares. Nigeria has converted over 120,000 vehicles to CNG and has more than 400 conversion centers, progressing towards more sustainable and affordable transport.
