Investigative Committee Formed After 37 Deaths in NSCDC Custody

Minister orders probe into deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State.

An independent committee has been established to investigate the deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. These individuals were held on suspicion of illegal mining. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the committee's formation, following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The deaths, which occurred on September 17, 2026, have led to the suspension of eighteen officers and the state's commandant. The committee is tasked with identifying the deceased, exploring the circumstances of their arrests, detention, and deaths, and recommending preventive measures. They must complete their investigation and present findings within two weeks. Officers are warned that any destruction of evidence will result in serious consequences.
