An Air Force officer tragically died after a fall from the rafters of the Alamodome in San Antonio during a pre-game demonstration on Saturday. The incident occurred before the University of Texas at San Antonio's (UTSA) football game against Navy, which was part of the university's Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans event.
The officer, who was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, was participating in a rappelling demonstration when he fell in an uncontrolled manner from the stadium rafters onto the field. According to reports, he was one of four service members involved in the demonstration.
Medical personnel quickly attended to the injured officer on the field, and he was placed on a stretcher before being transported to a local hospital by the San Antonio Fire Department. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the officer succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs confirmed the officer's death on Sunday. The 6th Combat Training Squadron, to which the officer belonged, is known for training military members in rappelling techniques, including descending from helicopters.
The incident has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a celebratory event honoring military service members and veterans. The UTSA community and military personnel are mourning the loss of the officer, whose identity has not been publicly released.
Further details about the circumstances leading to the fall have not been disclosed, and it is unclear if an investigation into the incident is underway.
